Notes from Member Update and Consultation Meeting on May 3, 2019

MISSION STATEMENT:
To normalize the conversation about mental health and addiction as it pertains to our Members and to educate Members about current resources available to them when dealing with these issues. The committee will explore additional opportunities for resources and advocate to the Executive Board for increased support structures when available.

WHO WE ARE:
We are a committee of approximately fifteen Members, appointed by the Executive Board. The committee is Chaired by an Executive Board Member, Co-Chaired by two Board appointed Members and supported by UBCP/ACTRA’s Health and Safety Performer Advocate. The committee meets once a month, schedule permitting. Consultation meetings will be open to all Members on a semi regular basis and will provide an opportunity for
Members to discuss Mental Health and Addiction support and resource options.

MANDATE/WHAT WE DO:
– Discuss and identify actionable steps to be submitted to the Executive Board with
the express purpose of providing education and resources to our Members on issues
relating to mental health and addiction.
– To work and communicate with other union committees and participate in local,
regional, national and international mental health and addiction task forces and
initiatives.
– Raise awareness about our committee at Membership meetings.
– Educate, celebrate, advocate.

GOALS:
Create a culture of mental wellness for Members and promote an environment
where speaking up about mental health does not mean losing work opportunities.
Operate with the understanding that we, as Committee Members, are not clinicians
and cannot provide counseling but we can guide Members to resources available to
them in a supportive, non-judgmental way.
